چکیده

Sweden belongs to an exclusive group of nine countries in the world with a forest cover greater than 65% of the land area. Forest products make a large proportion of Sweden’s net export income. Not only wood fibres but also berries and meat from the forests are important. Game hunting, reindeer farming, berries and mushroom gathering, as well as fresh water fishery, are all included in human food chains that are likely to be affected if the forest ecosystem is contaminated by radioactive nuclides. Another main reason for focusing on uptake and availability of radio nuclides in the forest ecosystems is the safe radiation environment, an environmental goal decided by the Swedish Government (Prop.2000/01:130). This means that both people’s health and the biological diversity should be protected against harmful effects from ionizing radiation.

137Cs in a raised bog in central Sweden.

The vertical distribution of (137)Cs activity in peat soil profiles and (137)Cs activity concentration in plants of various species was studied in samples collected at two sites on a raised bog in central Sweden. One site (open bog) was in an area with no trees and only a few sparsely growing plant species, while the other (low pine) was less than 100 m from the open bog site and had slowly gro...

Concentration of Heavy Metals in Bark Samples of Pine Trees in Neishabur, Iran

Background and purpose: Heavy metals in urban air are major health threats and increase the risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, and cancers in humans. An efficient and low-cost method for monitoring these pollutants is using tree bark as a bioindicator. The purpose of this study was to measure the concentration of heavy metals by pine tree bark as a bioindicator in Neishabur, north-east of Ira...

Radioactive cesium accumulation in freshwater fishes after the Fukushima nuclear accident

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1NPP) accident released large amounts of radioactive substances into the environment and contaminated the terrestrial and marine ecosystems in East Japan. The unpredicted nuclear accident is of global concern for human health and ecosystems. Investigations of radionuclides in the local environments were performed shortly after the accident began; howe...

Investigation of the Effects of Tissue Inhomogeneities on the Dosimetric Parameters of a Cs-137 Brachytherapy Source using the MCNP4C Code

Introduction: Brachytherapy is the use of small encapsulated radioactive sources in close vicinity of tumors. Various methods are used to obtain the dose distribution around brachytherapy sources. TG-43 is a dosimetry protocol proposed by the AAPM for determining dose distributions around brachytherapy sources. The goal of this study is to update this protocol for presence of bone and air inhom...

Radionuclides from the Fukushima accident in the air over Lithuania: measurement and modelling approaches.

Analyses of (131)I, (137)Cs and (134)Cs in airborne aerosols were carried out in daily samples in Vilnius, Lithuania after the Fukushima accident during the period of March-April, 2011. The activity concentrations of (131)I and (137)Cs ranged from 12 μBq/m(3) and 1.4 μBq/m(3) to 3700 μBq/m(3) and 1040 μBq/m(3), respectively. The activity concentration of (239,240)Pu in one aerosol sample collec...
